I think Carly Simon is from the future. Her lyrics of “You’re So Vain” ring through and through into 2016. Social media and technology has breed a society of instantaneous gratification and an almost obsessive self-consciousness. You can become a Youtube celebrity or Insta-famous through social media. Don’t get me wrong, good has also come about social media and technology especially when it comes to DIY creativity and global news and communication. It has leveled the playing field between the consumer and the professional. With a smartphone and a photo filter APP anyone can be a photographer, a blogger or vlogger. You can get international news or video chat with someone across the world with a simple APP.
For better of worse the we are creatures of vanity. The selfie is the ultimate expression of Id. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the Id as a part of a person's unconscious mind that relates to basic needs and desires. Selfies full fill our pleasure principle of liking and being liked on social media. The introduction of the selfie stick in 2014 allowed us to up our selfie game as well as include 5-10 of our favorite people into the “groupfie” pic.
But the bar has been raised once again with the LuMee. The LuMee is a phone case with an LED front facing light that illuminates your face when taking a selfie or video chatting in poor lighted settings. Reality star Kim Kardashian West, celebrity Ellen DeGeneres to politician Hilarity Clinton are singing LuMee’s praises.
I’m sure Carly would have no shame in taking a perfect selfie with a LuMee.
