Birth of Neumann

In the world of professional audio, few names evoke as much respect and admiration as Neumann. Renowned for its impeccable craftsmanship and innovative spirit, Neumann has been at the forefront of audio technology for nearly a century.

From legendary studios to the stages of iconic performances, Neumann microphones and equipment have captured the essence of sound with unmatched precision and clarity. This is the story of how a visionary brand transformed the landscape of audio recording and set the standard for excellence

The Beginning

In the bustling city of Berlin, Georg Neumann founded Neumann GmbH in 1928. With a vision to revolutionize sound recording, Neumann's early years were dedicated to developing and manufacturing recording equipment.

Chapter 2

1930s-1940s

The Birth of the Condenser Microphone

Shortly after its inception, Neumann introduced the CMV 3, the world’s first commercially available condenser microphone.

This groundbreaking invention set a new standard in audio recording, offering unmatched clarity and sensitivity. The CMV 3, affectionately known as the “Neumann bottle,” became a staple in recording studios worldwide.

Pioneering Audio Technology

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Neumann continued to innovate. Despite the challenges posed by World War II, the company remained committed to advancing audio technology.

During this time, Neumann introduced additional capsules for the CMV 3, including the M7, the world’s first cardioid condenser capsule. Neumann further developed disk-cutting lathes and established itself as a leader in the field of professional audio equipment.

Chapter 3

1949: The Legendary U 47

In the post-war era, Neumann released the U 47, a microphone that would become legendary in the music industry. Known for its rich, warm sound, the U 47 was embraced by artists and producers alike. It played a crucial role in the recordings of countless iconic tracks, cementing Neumann’s reputation for excellence.

1980s: Embracing New Technologies

As the audio industry evolved, Neumann embraced new technologies and continued to innovate. The introduction of the TLM (Transformatorloses Mikrofon) series in the 1980s marked a significant advancement. These transformerless microphones offered improved clarity and fidelity, catering to the growing demand for high-quality audio in various applications.

 M 49 and KM series

During this time, the company introduced several new microphones, including the M 49 and KM series, which further enhanced its reputation. Neumann's microphones became the go-to choice for top recording studios, radio stations, and television networks.

Chapter 5

1990s

A New Chapter with Sennheiser

In 1991, Neumann was acquired by Sennheiser, another prestigious German audio company. This acquisition brought together two industry giants, combining Neumann’s expertise in studio microphone technology with Sennheiser’s resources and global reach.

Despite the change in ownership, Neumann maintained its distinct brand identity and continued to operate independently. In 1997, the company introduced the TLM 103, a microphone that quickly became a favorite among recording professionals for its versatility and pristine sound quality.

Chapter 6

2000s - 2020s

Continued Excellence and Modern Innovations

Entering the new millennium, Neumann continued to push the boundaries of audio technology. In 2010, the KH-line of studio monitor speakers was launched, extending Neumann’s expertise in transducer technology to playback systems. With the NDH-line of headphones, the same precise sound image became available in a portable format.

Additionally, Neumann ventured into the realm of digital audio, developing cutting-edge products to meet the demands of modern studios.  Neumann introduced the MT 48, an audio interface that captures the full dynamic range of Neumann microphones and is optimally matched to the KH-Line of studio monitors as well as Neumann headphones. At the same time, reissues of its legendary tube microphones of the 1950s and 60s confirmed that Neumann has remained true to its roots.
